Come to the calm of a well functioning brain.

What is happening with my teenager anyway??

The brain of a teenager is changing dramatically.  The prefrontal cortex, the front part of the brain that is the CEO, is the last part of the brain to mature.  This part of the brain is growing during the preteen years and then is being pruned during the teen years.  The decision making ability is limited because of this new development.

The cerebellum plays a role in physical coordination and supports higher learning related to math, music, and advanced social skills.  This area of the brain, next to the brain stem, is also developing at this time.

The corpus callosum is also developing at this time,  It is a bunble of nerve fibers that connects the right and left side of the brain.  This is growing new connections at this time.

The amygadala is the emotional center of the brain and home to fear and rage.  Teens depend on this part of the brain when they are processing information.  With adults the prefrontal cortex is working.  So teens use the tools of impulsive decisions, arguments and door slamming to get their point across.

The basil ganglia is the manager of the brain and is connected to the prefrontal cortex.  This area is directing and coordination small and large motor movements.  So get the teens involved in sports and music so that the brain can develop in a good way.

I hope you enjoy finding out about these different areas of the brain.  I find it fascinating.

LENS neurofeedback can help the teen years to run a little smoother.
