Come to the calm of a well functioning brain.
Scientists are developing a new approach to restore hearing loss. In the European Journal of Neuroscience, it is reported that scientists have been able to regrow the sensory hair cells found in the cochlea, a part of the inner ear. This is the part of the ear that converts sound vibrations into electrical signal and can be permanently lost due to age or noise damage. There are 30 million Americans that suffer from some degree of hearing loss. Other animals can restore this function; birds, frogs and fish. They are able to regenerate the sensory hair cells that are called epidermal growth factor (EGF). This activates the cells in birds ears. The researchers are trying to get these cells activated in mice. This is exciting news, we live in amazing times.
